Report: Reds 3-3 Penybont

10th November 2023

The Reds advanced to the next round of the Welsh Cup following a huge win on penalties at Stebonheath Park. A heroic save from Scott Coughlan proved to be the difference in the shootout.

A brace from Ethan Cann as well as a header from Jamie Baker saw the Reds finish 90 minutes three a piece.

Penybont started the game on the front foot and created a number of chances. The Reds defence had plenty of work on their hands but did well to keep the score level early on.

Just after the 20 minute mark Ryan Bevan tried his luck with a long range strike forcing Pennock into a strong save. Following a bright spell, it was the Reds who took the lead.

A misplaced backwards pass from the Penybont backline allowed Cann to find himself in behind. The forward took the ball around the keeper and calmly finished to open the scoring.

However, just minutes later Penybont found themselves level. A cross poorly dealt with allowed the ball to fall to Reffell who drew the sides level.

It was then the visitors who found themselves in front, a fantastic bit of play down the left hand side saw a great cross fly into the box. Venables then rose to meet the cross and head his side in front ten minutes before the break.

Just five minutes into the second half, Cann picked up the ball on the left hand side, cutting onto his right before striking into the top right corner to level the game.

The Reds then found themselves in front. A corner finding Louis Gerrard outside the box whose header was able to find Baker in the area - his powerful headed effort beating the keeper.

Coughlan made a fine save to keep the Reds in front. A diving hand stopped the visitors from finding an instant leveller.

Despite defending well, Penybont scored a late equaliser to send the game to a penalty shootout.

Following a closely contested shootout it was the winning strike from David Lyon and the super save from Coughlan to send Stebonheath Park wild in celebration.
