Report: Reds 3-2 Afan Lido

5th January 2024

The Reds returned to winning ways in a closely contested game at Stebonheath Park. Despite a brace from Joshua Webber for the visitors, it was a goal from Joe Hopkins as well as a brace from a returning Thomas Hillman that saw the Reds take all three points.

New signings Hillman and Curtis Hutson were able to link up twice to create the decisive goals.

The visitors found an early breakthrough just four minutes into the game. An over the top pass in behind caused some miscommunication in the back line which gifted Webber an open goal.

Afan Lido then looked for their second - a header from a corner causing Scott Coughlan to make a strong save, keeping the score at 1-0.  The Reds then had a chance of their own, Tom Johnston striking the bar from a strong header.

A great passage of play then saw the Reds draw level. Fantastic footwork from Hopkins in the area allowed the captain to shoot and see his shot slot into the bottom corner out of the keeper's reach.

Following the Reds dominance in the first half - Thomas Hillman attempted to find Ethan Cann in the box before seeing his pass blocked. Curtis Hutson then had the final chance for the Reds before the break - his shot falling just wide of the post.

The Reds started the first half in incredible fashion, new signing Hutson saw his fantastic cross fly across the ground - fellow debutant Hillman was able to get onto the end of it and put the Reds in front.

Some great play by the Reds who continued to apply pressure and create chances. A fantastic cross from the left hand side just missing Cann in the box.

Afan Lido had their first big chance of the second half just after the hour mark. Matthew Beynon connected with a fierce shot following a scramble in the box.

The Reds increased their lead to two using the same combination for the previous goal. A fantastic cross this time in the air from Hutson, finding Hillman once again at the back post to fire past the keeper.

Afan Lido then found their second goal. A cross into Webber who converted for his second of the game.

Hopkins then tried his luck from range, forcing Exauce Dimonekene to make a strong save.

The Reds held on strong and defended well to ensure they secured the three points.
